Its July already, which means its summer time at the most part of the world. Meanwhile in Indonesia, its summer all year long so it doesn’t make any differences. I used to hate hot weather aka summer, but I’ve kinda grown to like it lately.
Anyway, summer could mean a disaster for those who has oily skin. I mean….. your skin tend to be oilier in summer right? or when the weather is hot, in general. Skincare can be your way out in dealing with too much greasiness in your face. However, some people still have misunderstanding about how to treat oily skin. Rather than controlling it, some people ends up making it worse.
Its fair to say that there’s no one-size-fits-all skincare routine. I know that there’s a label for ‘a skin type’; dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, or normal skin. But at the end of the day, your skin is different from the others. In my opinion, skin type is much more complicated than the label we know. For example, I would say my skin type is combination (oily in the T-zone, normal in the rest of my face). However, there are days where my skin is not oily at all, the time when my skin is very dehydrated and it makes my skin very oily. For me, that’s the reason why I cannot stick to one specific routine, I always switch products based on what my skin ‘needs’.
In this post, I’m gonna share with you my basic survival guide when it comes to taking care of my skin. Disclaimer, this is not a professional advice or opinion. Its purely based on my experience. This post might be more suitable for people who has oily/combination like mine as I have limited knowledge about dry skin type. But, I do think this still will be applicable for everyone, just adjust it to what your skin needs!
#1 Gentle Cleanser is a Must!
Not many people aware that face cleanser can be crucial in skincare routine. Even if you have an oily skin, you should not use a cleanser that’s going to dries out your skin. In my experience, its just making everything worse. Try to avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)/Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), it is a common ingredient in face cleanser as its functioned as a ‘foaming agent’. However, SLS/SLES can strip off the moisture out of your skin barrier, and in a long term its going to irritate and damage the skin barrier. So instead, try to look for a gentle and pH balancing face cleanser like COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser or Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser.
#2 Hydration is Important!
Who says people with oily skin doesn’t need to hydrate their skin? I do think this is wrong. Most of the times, dehydrated skin is the main cause of oily skin. Our skin produce ‘more’ sebum/oil because of it lacks of hydration/moisture, so instead our skin use the excess sebum/oil to re-moisturize the skin.
I just tested this last night, I only use cleanser, exfoliating toner, and then moisturizer. I woke up with an oilier face. Usually, my night time routine consist of cleanser-hydrating toner-essence-moisturizer. That routine is my basic routine, I sometimes use serum when I feel like I need it, or use sleeping mask instead of moisturizer. Anyway, when I do my normal routine, I don’t woke up with an oily skin. So, I do think hydration is important if you want to control oil production in your face.
I find it more complicated when I’m trying to ‘fix’ my day time skincare routine. As weather is also affecting my skin condition. But still, for me hydration is key, for me hydrating/moisturizing essence and moisturizer is key. And I’ve been skipping morning cleanser and replace it with wiping my face with a toner (with a cotton pad), I find this to be helpful in reducing oil production in my face.
PS: If moisturizer alone is enough for you, stick with it! Or in night time routine you can always replace moisturizer with hydrating sleeping mask like Laneige Water Sleeping Mask.
#3 Lightweight Moisturizer is Your BFF
I still find a lot of people who skips moisturizer because their skin is oily. My only advice for you is DON’T. Instead of ditching off moisturizer from your skincare routine to avoid the greasiness, opt for a gel and lightweight moisturizer.
Ok this is important. Exfoliating your skin will do good to your skin. When you have an oily skin, your pores can be easily clogged and dead skin cells are pilling up easier on your skin (which will make your skin looks so dull). BHA based chemical exfoliator is the best for oily skin, as BHA can penetrate deep into the pores while eliminating the dead skin cells on our skin.
You can also incorporate clay mask into your routine. I’m not really a big fan of clay mask, but clay mask is great for unclogging pores and reducing oil production. However, clay mask can be drying at times, so don’t forget to hydrate your skin.
